Towards the end of summer, warm days and cool nights can alternate quickly. Air temperature alone does not always tell you what is happening in your pond. Pay particular attention to the water temperature and the behaviour of your fish.
As the water cools, pond fish become less active and their digestion slows down. Offer smaller portions and check that the food is eaten within a few minutes. Remove any uneaten food and provide less the next time.
Gradually reduce the amount of food as the pond water cools further. This prevents uneaten food from affecting water quality and disturbing the pond’s biological balance.

Measure the temperature approximately twenty to thirty centimetres below the surface. Offer small portions and observe how the fish respond. Active fish that immediately come to feed can still be fed. If they show little interest, reduce the amount further.
