Cloudy water? Check the basics
Cloudy water can have several causes. Start by checking the basics.
Tip
Cloudy pond water can have several causes. Start by looking carefully at what has changed in and around the pond. Have you been feeding more recently, has there been heavy rain, has the filter been cleaned, or have a lot of leaves and other organic material entered the water?
Check the following points:
Is the pump and filter working properly?
Check that the water is circulating sufficiently and that the filter is not blocked.
Is there food on the bottom?
Uneaten food breaks down and increases the load on the pond water.
Is there a lot of organic material present?
Remove excess leaves, dead plant material and visible debris.
Is there sufficient aeration?
Especially in warm weather, additional water movement or aeration can be important.
Have there been any major changes recently?
After major maintenance, a water change or adding fish, the pond system may need time to become stable again.
Do not take several measures at once. Change one thing at a time and observe what happens. This makes it easier to identify the cause of cloudy water and helps avoid unnecessarily disrupting the biological balance further.

First check the water circulation, filter and amount of organic material in the pond. Do not clean the filter completely, and preferably rinse biological filter media gently with pond water to preserve as much of the existing biological system as possible.
Temporarily reduce feeding if food remains uneaten and remove visible debris. Then leave the pond undisturbed for a few days and monitor any changes in the water. This avoids making several changes at once, which can make it harder to identify the actual cause.
