PLANTEN

Prune dead pond plants before winter.

Remove dead plant parts before they decompose on the bottom and pollute water quality.

Tip

Prune dead pond plants before winter.

In the autumn, many marginal and aquatic plants slowly die off. Dead leaves and stems that remain in the water decompose on the bottom and add extra organic material to the pond.

Remove yellowed, brown, and soft plant parts before they detach. Use clean, sharp tools and cut away only the dead part. Leave healthy underwater plants and evergreen species undisturbed as much as possible.

Remove loose plant material from the water with a landing net. Leave it briefly next to the pond so that small aquatic animals have a chance to return. Then dispose of the remains via the compost heap or green waste container.

Work calmly and in small sections. This keeps the pond manageable and prevents silt and nutrients from ending up in the water unnecessarily.

BIOGRO advice

Never prune all plants at once. Leave healthy parts and work in phases so that fish and small aquatic animals retain sufficient shelter.
