Your pond can run low on oxygen even in late summer
Warm pond water holds less oxygen. Here’s how to prevent problems for your fish.

Tip
Your pond can run low on oxygen even in late summer
Hot days can cause oxygen shortages even towards the end of summer. Warm water holds less oxygen, while fish, beneficial pond bacteria and other aquatic life consume more of it.
Look for fish gasping at the surface or gathering near the waterfall, fountain or filter outlet. These may be signs that the oxygen level in the water is too low.
Increase aeration with a waterfall, fountain or air pump. Keep it running continuously during hot periods, especially overnight and in the early morning. Temporarily reduce feeding and remove excess algae, dying plants and other organic waste.
BIOGRO advice
Check your pond early in the morning, when oxygen levels are usually at their lowest. Make sure your waterfall or fountain creates noticeable movement at the water’s surface. If your pond contains many fish or the warm weather persists, a separate air pump is the most reliable addition.
